Jack Michaels - Grinning about Summit!

2008 has seen Jack Michaels going from strength to strength, both as a DJ and as a promoter of his own events and record label. Before Summit this weekend, we wanted to get a bit of a lowdown on what is in store for Grin over the next year. Oh, and we ALSO wanted to get a mix off of him for all of you hahaha!!

Jack, things have really progressed for you since the start of this year, starting with an amazing opening by playing last years Push NYE at Koko. How has the rest of 2008 been for you?

Its been rollercoaster year i must say! at start of the year i had my first abroad booking in Prague headlining for a night called Selectro which has stood out the most this year as me and Yiannis Balkizas went out there together! it was only a drop in visit, staying for one night playing and flying home for another gig at the egg the next day so me and Mr Balkizas had to stay up the hole time partying so so SO much fun to be had in Prague thats all ive gotta say. The rest of the year ive been focusing all of my efforts in to my record label Grin Recordings and lots and lots production work

What are your plans for New Years Eve this year?

Me and the Grin Boys (Mark Batch, Richard Bowditch, Yiannis Balkizas and James Edwards) will be Hosting the second arch at SE1 Club For Moondance which is shaping to be a really sick night as we are going balls out with it.

Your label Grin recordings has come on leaps and bounds. How has your chosen label sound developed since it started?

Well as a label you have to move with times to keep music fresh and different when we started our label we never pigeon holed our selves we like to say that we like all forms of house and techno But and a big BUT in our own style.

Grin has formed with close-knit family and friends working together to achieve your aspirations. How do you think things operate at Grin differently to other labels because of this, and do you think this has a positive effect on the finished products?

Well grin strated with me my brother (Richard Bowditch) and my other brother from another mother Mark Batch at my house where it still is based so its always felt like a family from the start. now we have James Edwards and Yiannis Balkizas on board which are my to best friends so its brought us even closer as a working unit

You started off with hard house. What made you change your direction to go from hard house to house and electro?

Hardhouse was my initiation into club land and i didn’t now any other styles of music It wasn’t untill Ibiza 2006 when i really experienced house / techno for its true form from that moment i was in love with the music that i play now.

What are some of your favourite tracks right now?

What is your long term goal as a DJ i.e. where would you like to be in say 5 years?

My main goal is to see Grin Recordings aspire to one of the top record labels in the industry and for myself to be playing at festivals all over the world

You started at Inigo, threw a boat party in Ibiza, and then made an amazing leap straight to Ministry of Sound to co-host for Gallery on a regular basis. How are you and the guys handling the pressures?

I wouldn’t say its pressure as such more nerves as me and the boys really want the people to have an amazing time so they’ll come back for more grin fun.

Where would you like to see things go in 2009?

Grin is starting to get more of a reputation for itself so we would like to keep it going that way and building it to bigger and better events. Our main goal with grin next year and is to smash the Bar room at Ministry of sound. For myself i would like to get some more main room sets as i get play more of techy sound

How are your productions getting along now?

Me and Mark Batch have been in the studio all year round working on new bits which has seen us getting our first signed up track to Big In Ibiza for our track “R.I.D” and to Itronik for our first Vinyl outing Which is called “Control Your Feet” also ive been working with Yiannis Balkizas’ on the more techno side of producetion to make our first full on tech-house tracks which has been signed up by Itch Records called“Credit Crunch”. when our tracks don’t get signed to other labels we get it on Grin. Tracks coming soon will be

Acsend - Jack Michaels & Mark Batch
To Find Me - Jack Michaels & Mark Batch
Montreal Is Safe - Yiannis Balkizas
Bombay Bubble - Yiannis Balkizas
Pardon - Yiannis Balkizas
Oceans Apart - Yiannis Balkizas
Flicker - James Edwards
Tickerbell On Speed - James Edwards
Sustain - Jack Michaels
Peace In The Middle East - Yiannis Balkizas
Twisted Little Fly - Yiannis Balkizas

So then, Summit this weekend, and you’ll be down in Babalou whipping up a storm as usual. You looking forward to it?

By far i love playing summit the most as everyone in there is usally going bonkers and its one of the only times i get to smack out some real filth. So yeah im really looking forward to it

Now you said you want to bring a different style to the platter than usual for Summit. We’re intrigued? What are you up to Jack?!

Well a lot of nights have a strong idea of what they want their DJ's to play, which as a professional DJ, you have to accomodate. Some don't like the music getting to tough. Summit has always given me decent set times, and been a bit different in that they let you get on with the job that you want to do, and this allows me to provide something on a much filthier tip, and be the DJ I want to be.

Also ive made a Mix for all you summit nutters
